SEM refers to “Search Engine Marketing” or, in German, “Suchmaschinenmarketing”. This is an area of online marketing and focuses on these core aspects:

  • Positioning strategies: SEM includes all strategies that serve to position a website in the unpaid and paid search results.
  • An area of digital marketing: SEM specializes within online marketing and integrates both SEO (search engine optimization) and SEA (search engine advertising). This means that both measures without costs for optimization in search engines (SEO) and paid advertisements in these search engines (SEA) fall under SEM.
  • Increasing online presence: The primary goal of SEM is to improve the online presence of a website in the results of search engines such as Google in order to generate a higher number of visitors and ultimately increase sales or other decisive KPIs (key performance indicators).
