If you use an Excel file as a source in Power BI, it is usually connected locally. Now you cannot update the source without a gateway. With the following steps you can easily replace an existing local Excel file with the cloud version. You don’t have to recreate the Power BI report or reconnect the source!
- Upload the Excel file to OneDrive or SharePoint and call up the path via Excel.
Get the path of the Excel file
2. Do the following in Power BI
In Power BI choose Transform Data 
Show the formula bar 
Change File.Contents to Web.Contents and paste the copied path 
Log in to access the cloud file
